During Children’s Week in Paignton, Devon, Pop-Up Adventure Play hosted a fun-filled week of activities for children of all ages. This annual festival has celebrated children for over 60 years, with donkey rides, puppet shows, cooking classes, go-cart races and even mice on tight ropes!
Quiet, community-friendly location for Pop-Up Play
We set up our pop-up adventure playground in a quieter area of town, providing an alternative to the busy seafront. Families enjoyed playful breaks during their shopping trips. On the first afternoon, the event became extra special when the cast of Star Wars visited. One child, whose mother had crafted a Dalek outfit, excitedly cornered Boba Fett in a telephone box, delighting everyone.
Creative play spaces and inclusive adventure play
Under a small canopy, we offered a space filled with recycled materials for creative play. Nearby, the Pond Café provided seating and refreshments for parents. When it rained, we easily moved indoors. This setup created an ideal environment for inclusive community play.
Returning visitors and child-led pop-up play
Many children returned daily to build, explore and connect. We welcomed children on the autistic spectrum, as well as those who preferred calmer activities. Parents appreciated a safe, structured space where their children could fully engage in child-directed play.
Children’s week Paignton
Children’s Week Paignton allowed us to connect with families, volunteers, and local organisations who shared our vision of more playful communities. The collaboration with Play Torbay demonstrated how partnerships can create lasting opportunities for children to thrive.
