During our Canadian tour, every stop has brought new surprises. In Winnipeg, the experience began with an unforgettable sight – horses around a smoky fire, observed by cautious cows. At first, we thought it was a campfire scene but later learned it was smudging, a traditional way to keep mosquitoes at bay. It set the tone for a memorable visit just outside the city, in Argyle.

Workshop with Manitoba Nature Summit

We were invited to Winnipeg by the amazing team at the Manitoba Nature Summit. They gathered professionals, families and community members at the beautiful Brant-Argyle School. Participants came from across Manitoba and even as far as Kenora. The workshop sparked conversations, nods of recognition and new commitments to bring playwork ideas into local communities.

Outdoor play at Brant-Argyle

The next day, we hosted a community play session on the school grounds. Children and families arrived from near and far to take part. Children transformed loose parts into forts, sparked stick battles and used glue as the foundation for creative constructions. Ironically, the only bump or bruise came from the school’s purpose-built play structure, not from the free play activities!

Families and playwork in action

It was inspiring to watch families engage together. At first, some adults joined in heavily, but over time many realised the children didn’t need them in the centre of play. They moved to the sidelines, giving children the freedom to lead. This shift was a powerful reminder that play belongs to children and adults can best support by stepping back.

Why play matters

Children are naturally skilled at play – it’s built into who they are. Sometimes, all they need is space and time to reconnect with it. Community play events like this give children those opportunities while also bringing together adults who value play. They spark conversations and lay the foundations for sustainable, supportive communities.
