Two weeks after Playwork Campference 2019 wrapped up, I found myself surrounded by snotty tissues. No, I wasn’t crying because it was over – this was a post-project cold. In fact, the scale of the event hinted at why it knocked me off my feet.
Over four days and three nights, 101 participants from nine countries came together in Houston. It was one of the biggest and most meaningful projects I’ve ever been part of. As I slowed down, I wanted to take this chance to reflect and thank those who made it possible.
Appreciating the team
First, I want to thank Jill of Bayou City Play and my brilliant work partner, Morgan. They kept the planning grounded, managed the details and supported me when things got stressful. Their balance of organisation and creativity made the process not only possible but enjoyable.
Gratitude for our hosts
The Parish School and Adventure Play at The Parish School, especially Nancy Bewley and Wes, welcomed us so generously. They opened their site, kitchens and grounds so we could run workshops, host activities and explore the space together. Their support made Campference possible.
Volunteers and contributors
From keynote speakers, Jill and Ali, to every presenter, volunteer and parent – we are deeply grateful. You shared stories, wisdom and energy while also tackling less glamorous tasks like cleaning, recycling and problem-solving behind the scenes.
Thanks also to those who supported the children attending – your playwork skills allowed parents to take part fully. From lost-and-found rescues to stepping in at short notice, your adaptability was invaluable.
The delegates
A special thank you to the 88 adults and 13 children who attended. You trusted us with accommodation, food and workshops and you came from across the globe to do so. The conversations, shared learning and laughter created a strong community of practice that will outlast the event itself.
Why playwork matters
Playwork brought us together. It’s a field built on diversity, advocacy, and a belief in children’s rights. Campference 2019 reminded us of the importance of this work – not only for children, but for the future of communities everywhere.

Here we all are, delegates from Campference 2019 on Adventure Play at The Parish School.
Looking ahead
Playwork Campference 2019 was spectacular, but it’s only one step. If you’d like to join us at the next Campference or learn more, get in touch via email, or get in touch using Facebook or via X. We’re looking forward to even more amazing playwork moments.
